Every time I pass by a cafe after work, the aroma of blended coffee and the sight of beautiful cakes displayed on top of the counter are hard to resist. Most of the time, I will give myself a treat, as a reward after a day of hard work. However, things have begun to change after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
When a cup of coffee and a slice of cake became more costly, I decided to cut down my desserts. In order to savour my favourite dessert in an affordable manner, I resorted to making my own.
One day while I was searching for new recipes, my friend gave me a recipe to make egg tarts. According to him, the recipe was easy and there was no way I could mess it up. It is 100 per cent fool proof and I was guaranteed success. We rushed off to the shop for ingredients, came home and got ready to bake. We beat the eggs, rolled the dough, prepared the syrup and turned up the oven.
Within an hour, we were finished and we waited patiently in the kitchen. After 20 minutes, we caught a whiff of mouth-watering, freshly baked tarts. I could not wait and took a huge bite as soon as they were taken out of the oven. I was so surprised at how good they tasted, although they did not look as pretty as the ones sold in the bakeries. The pastry was crispy and fell apart easily, and the soft egg filling was heavenly. I ended up eating all three at once!
After dinner, we went to a bakery at a nearby Tesco store and found that the price of an egg tart was RM1.90. We giggled quietly, silently congratulating ourselves for baking them at a lesser cost.
While everything has become expensive due to GST, we can only try to save money by doing certain things ourselves. From shopping for cheaper ingredients to cooking our own food, the experience with the egg tart was fun. Although they were not consistent in texture, they tasted good because we even added more ingredients.
So I have decided that it is not necessary to have desserts in a cafe. I can enjoy all of that at home – a cup of black coffee in my favourite mug served with fresh pastries from my loyal oven. This is me enjoying my teatime to the fullest.
