Creating a personal brand in the media industry is not that easy. Without hard work and tireless efforts to succeed in your career, it will be absolutely tough to build or even sustain your ‘brand’.
These were some helpful tips given by the famous newscasters and TV hosts Tan Ley Teng of NTV7 and Ivan Toh (TV1) during the Build your Brand as a Media Personality sharing session, which was held at Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC), recently.
“Most of the time, people opt for good brands because of the quality products that these brands produced.
“Thus, it doesnt matter in which line we are working, the brand that we want to create relies on ourselves.
“If we don’t put much effort into our work, we will not be able to achieve anything, let alone create the ‘brand’,” Ley Teng said adding that gaining credibility is a starting point to build a personal brand.
As for Ivan Toh, he believed that good working attitudes could take one far in the media industry.
“This process (building brand) is long and difficult. Being a broadcast journalist myself, it is not just about my personal brand, but the brand of the organisation that I am working in too.
“Thus, every time before I go out covering the news, I would do extensive research on the particular subject that is related to the event and present the news in a creative way.
“Always remember that all these will lead to building your own brand in this industry,” he said.
During the session, Ley Teng and Ivan also shared their experiences in the media industry and encouraged students to keep learning and be multi-tasking if they want to succeed in this field.
