Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) students received two awards, the Best Music Video and the Best Cinematography, at the Flicks Fiesta 2018 Awards Night in KDU Penang University College (KDUPGUC), recently.
The Best Music Video Award was presented to Colossus Film Production with its music video “Beng Mi Xiang” and the Best Cinematography Award to Meteor Pictures with its short film “Dreadful”.
Both production teams won a trophy, a certificate and cash prize of RM500 (for Best Music Video) and RM1,000 (Best Cinematography).
Meteor Pictures crew Voon Ching Han, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Communication (Advertising) (Hons) in HCUC, said the team had spent around two weeks to produce “Dreadful”.
“Our team had also encountered a number of challenges during the shooting process, especially when we had to travel to a designated destination to complete the shooting.
“This is a tough time for us where at the same time we need to prepare for the Final Year Premiere and studies,” she said.
Meanwhile, HCUC alumna Loh Carol said her team members had sleepless nights to produce the music video “Beng Mi Xiang”.
“With only three of us in the production team, from shooting to editing, we needed to work hand-in-hand to ensure the production is successfully done.
“My team and I are glad to receive the Best Music Video Award and I believe this recognition could motivate us to come up with more quality productions in the near future,” she said.
Hassan Muthalib, a judge of Flicks Fiesta 2018 who is widely regarded as the Father of Malaysian Animation, said this year’s productions were of very high quality.
He praised the short film “Dreadful” for understanding the psychology of the character and the way the lighting was used. He said the idea of the music video “Beng Mi Xiang” was clear.
Another judge, Dr Wang Changsong said “Beng Mi Xiang” and “Dreadful” are outstanding and able to deliver a clear message to the audience.
“Dreadful” was one of the projects produced by HCUC final year Broadcasting students in their Final Year Premier CTRL+S, last August.
“Dreadful” is a short film about the fear and pressure a girl faced in a family which passes the culture of the Chinese Opera from generation to generation, causing her to lose her identity in fulfilling the satisfaction of others.
Flicks Fiesta is an annual short film competition organized by KDUPGUC students, aimed to provide a platform for students to showcase their independent production.
