The annual Host Idol Search Contest, which is now in its third year running, serves as a platform for secondary school students to instill self-confidence and improve their communication skills to follow in the footsteps of the country’s famous media personalities.
HCUC Vice Chancellor Dr Beh Kok Hooi said the university college has many inspirational figures like alumni Tan Ley Teng, who have not only inspired HCUC students and staff, but also the young secondary school students.
“Tan Ley Teng studied her diploma in mass communication with us before furthering her studies in Taiwan. Ever since she entered the media industry, her career has grown and thrived and she is the epitome of HCUC’s success.
“Even our former winners of this competition, who are still studying for their degree in Malaysia and abroad, have carved quite a name for themselves,” he said adding that many of the winners are also regular hosts for events all over Malaysia.
The preparations for the finals started more than six months ago with the auditions first held in March. The top 45 semi-finalists were then shortlisted to attend a workshop on April 28 to hone their skills in Youtubing and live reporting. With the newly acquired skills from the workshop, they played the role of Youtubers to produce their own video clips and the top 15 contestants were selected to enter the finals.
Today, the finalists were required to carry out live reporting on stage during the first round. They were further shortlisted to three per category and went through a second round where they performed a live promotion of products.
The winners and finalists received attractive prizes and HCUC scholarships worth more than RM150,000.
