It was two days of “learning and cracking their minds” however with fun at a workshop to inculcate the research culture among Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) academic staff.

          Workshop facilitator Dr Adrian Lee.

Workshop facilitator Dr Adrian Lee, who is currently Chairperson of Postgraduate Studies and senior lecturer at the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia, imparted his knowledge and experiences during the interactive sessions held at HCUC Auditorium.

The topics covered included identifying research subjects and reviewing literature. There was also a panel discussion on discovering subject matter and contributing to scholarships.

Participants were guided on steps to identify the research knowledge gap and connecting the various themes that might emerge in the relevant literature.

Spiced with anecdotes and humorous phrases, Dr Lee encouraged the participants to stimulate thinking on the subject “research” and how to overcome anxieties or problems they might be facing.

On the second day of the workshop, Dr Lee provided tips on academic writing styles, summing up the workshop with a mini-conference involving all the participants.

In an interview with HCUC News, Dr Lee said research is the “bread and butter” of academics as they constantly need to update and add knowledge which would also benefit HCUC’s research scholarship.

“The workshop is to create a research culture amongst the lecturers and hopefully this culture will be picked by students,” he said.

To a question on response from participants, Dr Lee said it was pretty good as the participants knew how to go about it, how to be critical of their research and that of their friends.

School of Languages and Translation Dean Mr Prakash Velloo, who is one of the participants, said the workshop on research is important for the academic staff and HCUC’s status as a university college.
